Statement
This work is a synthetic experience combining photography and sound installation that shows the perceptual changes of day and night carried by the trees in the streets of Xiamen. Using sound to measure the life activities of the living beings around the trees and the soil to explore a space of self-narrative for the trees living, which is on the margins of human care under the process of urbanization. During my roaming around the city from morning to night, I chose those roads with a high flow of people in Xiamen and photographed the soil around the trees and the crisscrossed branches, while listening to the soundscape around them in-depth, and seeing the feelings that arise in the moment as a reference system for living with the trees, to imagine an audiovisual image of the dependence of the trees’ perceptions of the human being and the environment around them.
During the daytime, oftentimes, people are in a hurry, and vehicles are speeding on the roads; trees mainly perform the function of public space, doing and being as a streetscape for people. Only when night comes, the neglected trees put off the traces of humanity and manifest together with the other beings around the habitat. They begin to reform their dynamics, in harmony with the melody of nature.
In this sense, how do trees perceive when their surroundings are divided into morning and evening according to the anthropocentric mindset? And how do trees define their survival in the face of human arrogance? This project questions the lack of care for the trees around us, tries to explore and measure the dynamic proximity between humans and ‘nature’, discusses how humans can feel the presence of nature from the site and embodied perspective, and reshapes the relationship between human and ‘nature’ through mundane care as a practical approach under the development of global ecological issues.
